Garden of the Gods Visitor Center Expansion Gets Green Light

Local News · 2025-12-03 · By Pikes Peak Courier Staff

The Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has approved a major expansion of the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center. The $15 million project will nearly double the center's footprint, adding a new wing dedicated to geological education, a 200-seat auditorium for community events and school field trips, and expanded dining facilities overlooking the park's iconic red rock formations.

The expansion comes in response to the park's surging popularity. Garden of the Gods welcomed 5.8 million visitors in 2024, up from 3.2 million in 2015, straining existing facilities and creating overcrowding during peak hours. The new wing will feature interactive exhibits developed in partnership with the Colorado School of Mines, exploring the 300-million-year geological history of the park's sandstone formations.

Funding for the project will come from the Garden of the Gods Foundation, corporate sponsorships, and a portion of the city's Trails, Open Space, and Parks sales tax. No entry fee will be charged, maintaining the free-admission tradition established when Charles Elliott Perkins' family donated the land to the city in 1909 with the condition that it remain free to the public forever.

Construction is planned to begin in March 2026 with a target completion date of summer 2027. During construction, the existing visitor center will remain open, though some parking areas will be temporarily reduced. Park officials are encouraging visitors to use the new shuttle service from downtown Colorado Springs during the construction period to minimize traffic impacts.
