Pikes Peak Highway Set to Reopen for Tourist Season Next Month

The Pikes Peak Highway is scheduled to reopen to visitors on May 15th after its annual winter closure, officials from the Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department announced Wednesday. The 19-mile scenic route to the 14,115-foot summit of America's Mountain has been closed since late October for snow removal, maintenance, and safety improvements. This year's reopening comes slightly earlier than usual thanks to lighter-than-average snowfall in the high elevations and favorable weather conditions that allowed road crews to complete their work ahead of schedule.

During the closure, maintenance teams conducted essential repairs including patching damaged asphalt, reinforcing guardrails, clearing rockfall debris, and upgrading several switchbacks to improve safety. The department also installed new interpretive signs at key viewpoints along the route, highlighting the unique alpine ecosystem, geological features, and history of the peak that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write 'America the Beautiful' in 1893. Superintendent Tom Reynolds noted that the early reopening gives tourists and locals alike more time to experience one of Colorado's most iconic attractions during the peak summer season.

The highway typically attracts over 600,000 visitors annually, generating significant revenue for Colorado Springs through admission fees, gift shop sales, and the famous Summit House. Admission prices remain unchanged from last year at $15 per adult and $5 per child during standard hours. The highway will operate from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM initially, with extended hours until 8:00 PM beginning in June to accommodate increased summer traffic. Visitors are reminded that weather conditions at 14,000 feet can change rapidly, with snow possible even in summer months, so appropriate clothing and preparations are essential.

For those seeking an alternative way to reach the summit, the Pikes Peak Cog Railway continues to operate year-round with its newly renovated Swiss-built train cars. The railway recently celebrated its first full year of operation following a major three-year renovation project. Hiking enthusiasts can also tackle the challenging Barr Trail, a 13-mile trek from Manitou Springs to the summit that gains over 7,400 feet in elevation. Park officials encourage visitors to check weather conditions and road status on the official Pikes Peak website before making the journey, as the highway may close temporarily due to lightning, high winds, or other hazardous conditions.
