CC annexing cemetery: City approves 2013 budget, building codes

Mt. Pisgah Cemetery is located in Teller County but the land belongs to the city of Cripple Creek. This situation will soon be remedied as part of an annexation process that began several months ago. The first readings of four ordinances to annex the driveway, Vietnam Memorial outside the main cemetery and the cemetery itself were part of the Cripple Creek City Council's Dec. 5 meeting.

The land had to be annexed in four pieces in a specific order so that each piece would be contiguous with other pieces of city land. Once the ordinances are passed on second reading at a future meeting, the cemetery will be located within the city limits.

Council also approved the resolutions that levy property taxes in 2012 and set the budget for 2013. Unlike previous budgets, the 2013 budget didn't include a line item for the Director of Heritage Tourism, a job which had been filled by Tom Cooper. Starting in 2013 directors of the city's various museums will no longer report to Cooper but will instead report to City Administrator Ray White.

In parting, Cooper asked that the city to support the Cripple Creek Heritage Center by restoring its advertising budget. He said the since the budget was cut the number of people visiting the center has declined.

Council also approved an ordinance adopting international safety codes for elevators, escalators, platform lifts and stairway chairlifts.

Members of the Cripple Creek Casino Association have agreed to help fund a fixed route trolley system up to $20,000 in 2013. The trolley will run between the city's museums and casinos. This service eliminates the redundancy involved in having each casino providing its own shuttle service.

The trolley service is a key part of the Southwest Teller Transportation Coalition that will also provide four round-trip shuttles each day between Cripple Creek and Victor. This part of the service is supposed to start up some time before March.
