Garden of the Gods Visitor Center Unveils Major Technology Upgrade
The Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center reopened Wednesday after a two-week closure for a comprehensive technology upgrade that brings cutting-edge interactive exhibits to one of Colorado's most visited natural attractions. The $1.8 million renovation project, funded entirely through private donations and grants, transforms the visitor experience with augmented reality displays, interactive geological timelines, and immersive video installations that tell the story of the park's 300-million-year geological history. The upgrades position the visitor center as one of the most technologically advanced nature education facilities in the Rocky Mountain region.
Park Manager Rebecca Thompson showcased the new exhibits during a media preview Tuesday, highlighting an augmented reality sandbox that allows visitors to create topographical landscapes and observe how water flows and erosion shapes terrain. Another popular addition is a floor-to-ceiling video wall displaying time-lapse footage of the park through different seasons, weather conditions, and times of day, accompanied by soundscapes recorded within the park. A new interactive touch-screen display enables visitors to explore the park's diverse ecosystems, identify native plant and animal species, and learn about ongoing conservation efforts to protect this treasured landscape.
The renovation also addressed accessibility concerns by installing assistive listening devices, descriptive audio guides for visually impaired visitors, and tactile models of the park's famous rock formations. All exhibit signage now features large print and multiple languages including Spanish and Braille. The gift shop expanded its selection of educational materials and locally-made products, with proceeds supporting park programs and maintenance. A new theater with 4K projection capabilities will host documentaries about the park's geology, ecology, and cultural significance to the Ute people who considered the area sacred.
Garden of the Gods attracts approximately 2.5 million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited tourist destinations in Colorado. The park's towering red sandstone formations, including the iconic Balanced Rock and Cathedral Spires, provide a dramatic backdrop for hiking, rock climbing, and photography. Unlike many natural attractions, Garden of the Gods remains free to the public thanks to the vision of founder Charles Elliott Perkins who donated the land to Colorado Springs in 1909 with the stipulation it remain open and accessible to all. The upgraded visitor center opens daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, with extended summer hours beginning Memorial Day weekend.
